Overview
Weherahena Temple on the outskirts of Matara is one of Sri Lanka’s most visually extraordinary Buddhist temples — a sprawling complex of brightly coloured buildings, giant Buddha statues, and an underground tunnel decorated with an almost overwhelming abundance of Buddhist murals and dioramas. The centrepiece of the complex is a 39-metre seated Buddha statue — one of the largest in Sri Lanka — that dominates the hilltop above the temple buildings and is visible from considerable distances. Below the statue, a maze-like underground tunnel known as the Weherahena Cave is decorated from floor to ceiling with painted scenes from the Buddha’s life and the Jataka tales, with hundreds of three-dimensional models and dioramas displaying various stages of Buddhist narrative. The scale and ambition of the decorative programme is staggering — the temple feels like an entire cosmos of Buddhist art compressed into a single complex.
