Overview
Dambatenne Tea Factory is one of the most historically significant tea factories in Sri Lanka — established by Sir Thomas Lipton himself in 1890 as the centrepiece of his Dambatenne Estate, and still producing high-quality orthodox Ceylon tea from the same highland gardens over 130 years later. The factory combines genuine industrial heritage with a functioning production facility, and the tour provides an authentic encounter with the orthodox tea processing method — from withered leaf arriving from the estate to rolled and fermented leaf entering the firing rooms and emerging as the distinctive dark, wiry Uva highland tea. The combination of 19th-century factory architecture, the smell of fresh tea, the noise of the rolling and sorting machinery, and the historical context of Lipton’s vision for global tea marketing makes Dambatenne one of the most complete tea heritage experiences in the highlands.
