Overview
The Lake Gregory Boat Area is the eastern section of Nuwara Eliya’s Gregory Lake where recreational water activities are concentrated — a dedicated zone where paddle boats, row boats, and motorised dinghies can be hired for gentle explorations of the lake surface. The area is particularly well-maintained and family-oriented, with a small harbour structure, ticket offices, life jacket provision, and a sequence of departure jetties from which the boats set out onto the calm highland water. For many families visiting Nuwara Eliya — particularly the large number of Sri Lankan domestic tourists who come during the April season — a paddle around Gregory Lake is an obligatory and much-loved part of the trip. The views from the water looking back to the town and surrounding hills reveal Nuwara Eliya from an entirely different perspective: the colonial hotels and bungalows become visible through the tree line, and the full scale of the surrounding mountain landscape becomes apparent in a way that is impossible from the shore.
