Bogoda Wooden Bridge

Overview

The Bogoda Wooden Bridge is one of the oldest wooden bridges in Sri Lanka, spanning the Gallanda Oya river in the Bogoda area between Badulla and Hali Ela, believed to date to the Kandyan period and possibly earlier. The bridge is a remarkable survivor — a single-span wooden structure with traditional Kandyan-era joinery and carved decorative elements, protected by a pitched roof that has preserved the timber from the rains of centuries. The bridge is still used by the local community and remains fully functional despite its considerable age. A small Buddhist temple on the river bank adjacent to the bridge completes the heritage picture. The setting — an ancient wooden bridge over a clear highland river surrounded by forest and paddy fields — is genuinely beautiful and constitutes one of the most evocative heritage scenes in the Uva Province.
