Pattipola Railway Station

Overview

Pattipola Railway Station sits at 1,898 metres above sea level, making it the highest railway station in Sri Lanka and one of the highest on the Indian subcontinent. Located on the main hill country railway line that connects Colombo to Badulla via Nuwara Eliya, Pattipola is a small, beautifully preserved station surrounded by the open grassland and highland forest of the plateau near Horton Plains. The station building is a charming colonial-era structure with original features, and the sight and sound of a steam or diesel train arriving at such extreme altitude — billowing through the cloud forest cutting above the grassland — is one of the most atmospheric railway experiences in Asia. Pattipola is used by hikers accessing the Horton Plains from the south, and the combination of the station, the highland landscape, and the working railway makes it a destination worth visiting even without a train journey in mind.
