Overview
Cinnamon Island is a small inhabited island within the Bentota River estuary, accessible only by boat and visited primarily as a stop on the popular Bentota River Safari. The island is home to a family community that has practiced the traditional art of cinnamon cultivation, harvesting, and processing for several generations, and a visit here offers one of Sri Lanka’s most authentic spice experiences. Cinnamon — Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) — is considered the finest quality cinnamon in the world, with a delicate, sweet flavour quite distinct from the harsher cassia varieties sold elsewhere. On the island, visitors watch the harvesting of cinnamon sticks from the living tree, the careful peeling of the inner bark with specialised tools, the rolling of the cinnamon quills by hand, and the drying and grading process. Fresh cinnamon products — sticks, powder, and oil — are available for purchase directly from the family.
