Overview
Diyasaru Park is a thoughtfully developed eco-park and urban wetland reserve located in Battaramulla, on the eastern fringes of metropolitan Colombo. Spanning over 40 hectares, the park encompasses a mix of natural marshes, artificial lakes, walking paths, and observation platforms specifically designed to encourage birdwatching and environmental education. More than 100 species of birds have been recorded within the park’s boundaries, including purple herons, painted storks, Indian cormorants, little grebes, and numerous migratory species that pass through during the northeast monsoon season. The park is part of a broader municipal initiative to protect and celebrate Colombo’s extraordinary urban biodiversity — the wetlands that surround the city are internationally recognised as some of the most biodiverse urban ecosystems in South Asia. Diyasaru is relatively new but has quickly established itself as a favourite destination for birdwatchers, nature photographers, and families seeking a green escape from the urban environment.
