Overview

Wasgamuwa National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s least-visited but most rewarding wildlife sanctuaries, located in the buffer zone of the Mahaweli Development Corridor in the Matale and Polonnaruwa Districts. The park covers 37,063 hectares of dry zone forest, riverine vegetation, and open grassland along the Mahaweli and Amban Oya rivers, and harbours one of the most significant populations of wild Asian elephants in Sri Lanka — regularly seen in herds of 20–30 individuals at the riverine areas. The park also supports leopards, sloth bears, sambar and spotted deer, water buffaloes, mugger crocodiles, and a remarkable diversity of birdlife. Unlike the heavily visited Yala and Minneriya, Wasgamuwa receives very few tourists — meaning the wildlife encounters feel genuinely wild and unhurried. The Matale access route via Kalundawa provides the most convenient approach from the Central Province.
