Overview
Kalupahana is the valley at the base of the Diyaluma Falls cliff, where the Kuda Oya stream emerges from the base of the falls and flows through a beautiful valley of paddy fields, small farms, and forest before joining the larger river systems of the Uva lowlands. The valley is one of the most visually beautiful in the Haputale area — the Diyaluma escarpment rising dramatically at its head, the flat valley floor of bright green paddy contrasting with the surrounding forest slopes, and the small rural community going about their agricultural lives in complete oblivion of the spectacular geography surrounding them. Visiting the Kalupahana valley from below, looking up at the towering cliff from which the Diyaluma falls descend, provides a completely different perspective on the waterfall than the standard approach from above, and the valley itself is a place of profound natural and rural beauty.
