Overview
Hiyare Rainforest Reservoir is a protected natural area within the Galle District, centred around a reservoir built to supply Galle city with drinking water and surrounded by a buffer of lowland tropical rainforest that has been largely protected from development. The forest is an important habitat for several endemic bird species including the Sri Lanka blue magpie, brown-capped babbler, and Layard’s parakeet, as well as endangered amphibians and reptiles. A walking trail has been developed around the reservoir perimeter, and the combination of open water, forest edge, and dense interior creates a diversity of habitats concentrated in a small and accessible area. The Hiyare Forest is a genuine urban biodiversity hot spot — its proximity to Galle city makes it accessible for morning birdwatching before the heat of the day builds, and the relative lack of development pressure makes it ecologically intact in a way that is increasingly rare in the Southern Province.
