Mannar Island

Overview

Mannar Island is one of the most historically layered and ecologically distinctive islands in Sri Lanka — a long, flat island connected to the mainland by a 3-kilometre causeway, projecting into the Gulf of Mannar at the northwestern tip of the island. Mannar’s position at the narrowest point of the Palk Strait, just 28 kilometres from India, has made it a crossroads of trade, migration, and colonial contest for millennia. Today the island combines a fascinating mix of heritage: the ancient baobab tree (possibly Africa’s oldest planted specimen outside Africa), the Dutch Mannar Fort, the ancient Thiruketheeswaram Temple, the extraordinary Vankalai Bird Sanctuary, and the atmospheric ruins of the colonial town. The island’s flat, windswept landscape — dominated by the vast lagoon and the open gulf — has a stark, elemental beauty quite unlike any other part of Sri Lanka.
