Muthurajawela Marsh Reserve

June 14, 2026 claymatics.web@gmail.com Colombo Coastal Belt

Overview

Muthurajawela Marsh Reserve is the largest remaining coastal marsh ecosystem in the Western Province — a 3,068-hectare complex of tidal mangrove, freshwater marsh, and lagoon habitats between Colombo and Negombo that provides an extraordinary urban wetland boat safari experience within 45 minutes of the capital. The marsh is traversed by a network of tidal channels accessible by motorboat from the Hamilton Canal near Hendala, and the boat safari through the mangrove waterways reveals a world of kingfishers, herons, crocodiles, water monitors, and the remarkable biodiversity sustained by this coastal wetland just beyond the edge of urban sprawl. The marsh was historically used as a rice paddy irrigation system, and the name means “field of fallen gold” — a reference to its agricultural heritage.
