Overview
The Dumbara Valley is a vast, ancient eroded basin in the Matale District — one of the most geographically distinctive landscapes in Sri Lanka, clearly visible from the road between Kandy and Matale and from the heights of Riverston and the Knuckles Range above. The name Dumbara means “mist” in Sinhala — a reference to the perpetual haze that fills the valley on most mornings, creating a landscape of remarkable atmospheric depth. The valley floor is primarily agricultural, with paddy fields, river courses, and village clusters filling the basin, while the enclosing walls of the Knuckles Range and the adjacent ridges create a natural amphitheatre of mountain scenery.
