Overview
The Naula area in the Matale District contains a series of rock outcrops and cave formations in the transition zone between the dry zone and the central highlands, several of which bear ancient inscriptions and evidence of human habitation stretching back to the early historical period of Sri Lanka. The rock caves in this area are associated with Buddhist meditation and monastic retreat — a pattern common throughout the island where natural rock formations provided ready-made shelter for forest-dwelling monks. The inscriptions found on the drip ledges of these caves date to the 2nd and 3rd centuries BCE, placing them among the earliest evidence of literacy in Sri Lanka. While the Naula caves are not as large or as famous as Dambulla or Pahiyangala, they offer an intimate and largely undisturbed encounter with ancient human activity in the landscape — the kind of quiet historical discovery that serious travellers find more rewarding than the heavily visited showcase sites.
