Kandy Lake (Kiri Muhuda)

Overview

Kandy Lake — known in Sinhala as Kiri Muhuda (Sea of Milk) — is a beautiful artificial lake sitting at the heart of Kandy city, constructed in 1807 by the last king of Kandy, Sri Wickrama Rajasinha, just ten years before the Kandyan Kingdom fell to the British. The king created the lake as a pleasure garden reflecting the waters of the surrounding hills, an act that so angered the nobility — who were required to provide forced labour for its construction — that it contributed to the political instability that ultimately led to the British takeover. The lake is approximately 1.5 kilometres in circumference and is surrounded by a beautifully maintained walking path shaded by enormous rain trees. Reflections of the Temple of the Tooth, the Kandyan hills, and the clouds above create a constantly changing visual composition throughout the day. At its centre, a small island houses a storage facility that was historically used as the king’s ammunition store. Evening walks around the lake, with the temple and surrounding architecture illuminated, are among the finest urban experiences in Sri Lanka.
