Overview
The Dutch Reformed Church of Galle — historically called the Groote Kerk — is one of the oldest Protestant churches in Sri Lanka, standing within the Galle Fort precincts since its original construction in 1640, with the current structure completed in 1755. The church is a beautiful example of Dutch colonial ecclesiastical architecture — a simple, austere interior typical of Reformed church tradition, with a high vaulted ceiling, clear-glass windows admitting the bright southern light, and the original flagstone floor laid with the tombstones of prominent Dutch colonial officials and their families, many with elaborate carved epitaphs and heraldic symbols still legible after nearly three centuries. The church remains an active place of worship for a small Christian congregation and is open to respectful visitors outside of service times. It was most recently and comprehensively restored in the 1980s, and the interior woodwork, pulpit, and colonial-era memorial plaques are in exceptional condition.
