Overview
Jungle Beach is a small, secluded cove tucked between rocky headlands near Unawatuna, accessible only by a 20-minute walk along a forest trail from the main Unawatuna road or by boat from the bay. The beach takes its name from the dense tropical vegetation that crowds right down to the shoreline, creating a sense of complete natural enclosure that feels dramatically different from the more developed sections of the Unawatuna coast. The cove is protected by reef on both sides and the water is generally calm and crystal-clear, making it excellent for snorkelling. Coral formations and colourful fish are visible just offshore, and the combination of the forested headland, the clear shallow water, and the complete absence of beach infrastructure — no sun loungers, no restaurants, no parasol vendors — makes Jungle Beach feel genuinely wild. A very small number of drinks vendors occasionally set up under the trees, but the beach retains a purity of natural character that the main bay has long since lost.
