Talpe Beach

Overview

Talpe Beach stretches for several kilometres along the coast east of Galle between Dalawella and Koggala, representing one of the longest stretches of relatively undeveloped shoreline in the immediate Galle area. The beach is known particularly for its stilt fishermen — traditional fishermen who balance on a single pole (stilts) driven into the seabed in the shallow water just offshore, casting lines from this precarious elevated position — a technique unique to the southern coast of Sri Lanka. While the practice has become partly performative for photography purposes in some locations, Talpe maintains some genuine stilt fishermen who still use the technique as part of their livelihood. The beach itself is attractive and wide, backed by coconut palms and occasional small guesthouses, with the open Indian Ocean providing the reliable wave action that characterises the south coast.

  • The open ocean provides a livelier wave action than the sheltered bays
