Galle Fort Ramparts

Overview

The Galle Fort Ramparts are the great stone walls that enclose the entire fort precinct, stretching for approximately 1.5 kilometres around the seaward and landward perimeter in a roughly triangular form. Built and progressively reinforced by the Dutch from the mid-17th century, the ramparts incorporate 14 bastions, several with original cannon placements that remain in situ after more than three centuries. The walkway along the top of the ramparts is the finest promenade in the Southern Province — above the crashing Indian Ocean to the south and west, with views back across the red-tiled rooftops and bell towers of the fort’s interior, and east along the coastline toward Unawatuna and the distant hills. The most popular section of the rampart walk runs from the Flag Rock Bastion to the Point Utrecht Bastion and lighthouse, where the seaward perspective is most dramatic. At sunset, the light turns the fort walls and the sea in equal measure to copper and gold — creating one of the most extraordinary evening spectacles on the island.
