Overview
The Mannar area — encompassing the Vankalai sanctuary, the Mannar salt pans, and the connected coastal wetlands — forms one of the most important flamingo wintering grounds in South Asia. Greater flamingos migrate to these shallow coastal areas from their breeding grounds in India (primarily the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat) during the October–March season, and the concentrations that gather at Mannar are among the largest recorded in Sri Lanka. In peak years, flocks of thousands of flamingos colour the shallow lagoon and salt pan areas pink — a spectacle that draws specialist birdwatchers from across the world. The Mannar flamingo experience is best at dawn when the flocks are actively feeding and the flat landscape reflects the morning light.
