Overview
Galle Fort is the crown jewel of Sri Lanka’s colonial heritage and one of the finest and best-preserved examples of a fortified colonial city in Asia. Built initially by the Portuguese in 1588 and substantially enlarged and reinforced by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) from 1663 onwards, the fort encloses an entire urban quarter of approximately 90 hectares within its massive stone ramparts. Within the walls, a remarkable concentration of 17th and 18th-century Dutch colonial buildings — churches, warehouses, mansions, and administrative structures — has been transformed into one of Sri Lanka’s most vibrant living heritage precincts. Today the fort houses boutique hotels, fine restaurants, art galleries, jewellery shops, fashion boutiques, and cafés, all set within and around beautifully restored colonial architecture. The streets are narrow, cobbled in some sections, and lined with buildings whose architectural details reward slow, attentive exploration. Awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1988, Galle Fort is simultaneously a functioning neighbourhood and Sri Lanka’s most concentrated urban experience of colonial-era grandeur.
