Galle is a major city in Sri Lanka, on the southwestern tip. It is the administrative capital of Southern Province. The old town of Galle and its fortifications, built by the Portuguese in 1588 and modified by the Dutch, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the fort walls, narrow streets lined with 17th century Dutch colonial buildings house boutique hotels, art galleries, and cafes. The lighthouse and rampart walks at sunset are unmissable.
