Ella Gap Viewpoint

Overview

The Ella Gap is a dramatic natural break in the highland escarpment — a wide cleft through which the land drops suddenly from the cool, misty Uva Province highlands to the hot, flat dry zone plains below. Standing at the gap viewpoints above Ella town, the landscape visible below encompasses one of the most extraordinary geographical transitions in Sri Lanka: green highland tea estates in the foreground, a steep escarpment, and then the vast, heat-shimmering dry zone extending to the eastern horizon and beyond. On exceptionally clear days the view from the Ella Gap reaches the eastern coastline of Sri Lanka, over 100 kilometres away. The gap is also the route through which the famous train journey passes, making the viewpoints above it ideal for photographing the train as it descends from the highlands. The Ella Gap has a fundamental and permanent quality — a view that alters your understanding of the island’s geography.
