Overview
Heerassagala is a district of rolling hills and ridges to the east and south of Kandy, rising above the suburbs of the city to provide a series of elevated viewpoints and hiking terrains that are well known to Kandy residents but largely undiscovered by visitors. The hills form the eastern edge of the immediate Kandy valley and provide dramatic views both back across the city and forward toward the Knuckles Range and the broader Central Highland landscape. The hiking here is informal and unstructured compared to the established Hantana trails to the south, with routes threading through village paths, school playgrounds, rocky outcrops, and small woodland patches. The informal character is also its charm — the hills feel genuinely local, and encounters with tea estate workers, schoolchildren, and farmers along the paths add a human warmth to the natural experience. Several commanding viewpoints can be reached within 30–45 minutes of walking from the Heerassagala road.
