Overview
Beira Lake is a large freshwater lake located in the heart of Colombo, covering approximately 65 hectares. Originally used as a defensive moat by the Portuguese and later the Dutch during their colonial rule of the city, the lake today serves as a scenic urban retreat amidst the skyscrapers and traffic of modern Colombo. A beautifully maintained promenade runs along its banks, dotted with benches, food stalls, and manicured gardens. Paddle boats and rowing boats can be hired for leisurely outings on the water. The lake is flanked by some of Colombo’s most significant landmarks — including Gangaramaya Temple and the Seema Malaka floating shrine. At dusk, the reflections of the city skyline shimmer across the still water, making it a favourite spot for photographers and evening strollers. Beira Lake represents the rare green and blue space that brings calm to an otherwise bustling commercial capital.
