Huluganga Falls

Overview

Huluganga Falls is a beautiful and relatively little-known waterfall in the Matale District, fed by the highland streams that drain the western slopes of the Knuckles Range. The falls descend in a series of cascades through forested terrain, creating a sequence of plunge pools at different levels that are accessible with a short approach walk from the nearest village. The name Huluganga refers to the stream itself, which drains a section of the Knuckles watershed and maintains reasonable flow year-round with the exception of the most extreme dry months. The setting — dense forest on both sides of the waterfall, the sound of the cascade filling the space, and the complete absence of tourist infrastructure — gives Huluganga the feeling of genuine discovery. The natural plunge pools at the base are clear and cool, and wading in them during dry season is one of the most refreshing rewards after the approach hike.
