Bambarakiri Ella Waterfall

Overview

Bambarakiri Ella is a striking single-drop waterfall in the Matale District highlands, cascading cleanly from a rock ledge into a pool surrounded by tropical forest. The falls are located within a relatively accessible section of the highland terrain between Matale and the Knuckles Range, and the approach walk passes through a landscape of village gardens, paddy fields, and forest patches that provides a journey as rewarding as the destination. Bambarakiri Ella drops approximately 25 metres and maintains reasonable year-round flow due to the perennial streams of the Knuckles watershed. The falls are largely unknown to international visitors but are appreciated by local hikers and families from Matale who use the natural pool for recreation. The name Bambarakiri is derived from the Sinhala term for honeybee — a reference to the abundant bee colonies in the surrounding forest.
