Star Fort, Matara

Overview

The Matara Star Fort is a small but perfectly preserved Dutch military fortification dating to 1763, built across the Nilwala River from the main Matara Fort as an outpost to guard river approach routes. The fort takes its name from the distinctive star-shaped floor plan that was characteristic of Dutch military fortification design from the early modern period — a form developed to eliminate the blind spots that straight-walled fortifications presented to attackers. The Star Fort at Matara is a particularly fine example: a complete and largely unmodified six-pointed star structure with a central watchtower, low perimeter walls with salient angles at each point, and a surrounding moat. The fort is now maintained as a museum housing displays on Dutch colonial history in southern Sri Lanka. The building is compact and beautifully preserved, and its architectural purity — a complete and unchanged colonial fortification in near-original condition — makes it an exceptionally satisfying heritage visit.
