Overview
Jaffna Fort is one of the most significant surviving Dutch colonial fortifications in South Asia — a massive star-shaped bastion fort built by the Portuguese in 1618 and substantially enlarged and redesigned by the Dutch East India Company after 1658, when they captured it from the Portuguese in one of the defining military contests of the colonial Indian Ocean world. The fort occupies the southern waterfront of Jaffna town, its massive stone ramparts rising directly from the lagoon edge, with the water visible on three sides creating a landscape of unusual moated grandeur. The fort has an extraordinarily complex history spanning Portuguese, Dutch, British, and modern Sri Lanka military occupation, and it sustained considerable damage during the civil conflict era. Significant restoration work has been undertaken since 2009, and the fort is now accessible to visitors with restored sections of the ramparts and restored gateway structures.
