Overview
Jaffna Lagoon is the vast, shallow coastal lagoon that virtually encircles the Jaffna Peninsula — a complex of interconnected lagoon bodies covering hundreds of square kilometres between the islands and the mainland, providing the productive fishing environment that has sustained Jaffna’s communities for millennia. The lagoon is the geographical context for the entire Jaffna experience — its flat water visible from multiple points around the city, its fishing boats characteristic of every horizon. Boat trips across the lagoon reveal a vast, still world of shallow water, fishing activity, and the extraordinary quality of light that the flat northern landscape produces at dawn and dusk. The lagoon is also an important bird habitat, particularly for waders and waterbirds, and its margins support the fishing village communities whose traditional methods have changed little in centuries.
