Overview
The Ceylon Tea Museum at Hantana, perched on a hillside just outside Kandy with views over the tea-clad slopes that define the Central Province landscape, is housed in the Hantane Tea Factory — a beautifully restored colonial-era processing facility that was operational for over a century before being converted into the island’s premier tea heritage centre. The museum tells the complete story of Sri Lanka’s most significant agricultural and economic export — from the catastrophic coffee blight of the 1870s that led British planter James Taylor to plant the first commercial tea in Loolecondera Estate, to the development of the global Ceylon tea brand that transformed Sri Lanka’s highlands and gave the world some of its most beloved beverages. The original factory machinery — roller tables, leaf withering troughs, drying chambers, and sorting machines — has been preserved in situ, and the museum guides explain each stage of the production process with clarity and passion. Tea tasting sessions at the end of the tour are a highlight.
