Overview
Pitawala Pathana is a high-altitude patana (montane grassland) set within the Knuckles Conservation Forest, accessible from the Riverston side of the mountain range. The grassland plateau sits between forested ridges at approximately 1,000–1,200 metres, creating an open, expansive landscape of wind-swept grass, rocky outcrops, and seasonal wildflower blooms that is visually striking and ecologically rare. The patana is an important habitat for many of the endemic highland birds and insects of the Knuckles Range, and it represents a distinctive vegetation zone that results from a combination of elevation, soil type, and the burning practices of traditional highland communities. Walking across Pitawala Pathana in the morning mist, with the surrounding forest ridges emerging from the cloud and the sound of wind and birds as the only acoustic backdrop, is one of the most purely atmospheric natural experiences in the Central Province.
