Bambarakanda Falls

Overview

Bambarakanda Falls is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka — a single drop of 241 metres (790 feet) that cascades down the escarpment above Kalupahana in the Haputale area, making it not only the tallest in Sri Lanka but one of the tallest single-drop waterfalls in Asia. The falls are fed by the Kuda Oya stream from the highland plateau and are most dramatic during and after the monsoon rains, when the full volume of highland rainfall converts the slender cascade into a powerful curtain of white water visible from several kilometres away. A viewpoint accessible by a short trail provides the best perspective on the full height of the falls — a view that requires stepping back to take in the extraordinary scale. The surrounding landscape of highland forest and escarpment adds to the grandeur.
