Nine Arches Bridge

Overview

The Nine Arches Bridge at Demodara is one of the most iconic and photographed structures in Sri Lanka — a magnificent colonial-era railway viaduct spanning a deep jungle valley between Ella and Demodara stations, built entirely of brick, stone, and cement without a single steel girder. Constructed between 1919 and 1921 under British engineer Harold Baudrea, the bridge stands 24 metres high and stretches for approximately 91 metres across the valley on nine perfectly proportioned arches, framed by the vivid green tea estate vegetation on both sides. The bridge carries the hill country railway line that connects Badulla with Colombo — one of the world’s most celebrated scenic rail routes — and watching a train pass over the viaduct while standing on the viewing path below is one of the defining visual experiences of travel in Sri Lanka. The lush jungle, the climbing bougainvillea on the stonework, and the deep blue Uva Province sky above create a composition of extraordinary natural and architectural beauty.
