Overview
Kochchikade is a small coastal settlement and beach located a few kilometres south of Negombo town, known primarily as a traditional Catholic fishing community with a heritage that stretches back centuries to the Portuguese colonial era. The beach here is used primarily by local fishermen and their families — colourful outrigger boats are launched from the sand each evening and return at dawn laden with fish. The community is deeply Catholic, centred around the historic St. Anne’s Church which attracts thousands of pilgrims each July for the Festival of St. Anne. The beach itself is unmanicured and authentic, with fishing paraphernalia, dried fish, and the sounds of the sea creating a scene far removed from the tourist beaches further along the coast. For photographers and culture seekers, Kochchikade offers an intimate window into the fishing community life that has shaped the western coast’s identity for over 400 years.
