Overview
The Dutch Canal — known in Sinhala as the Puttalam Kalapuwa Oya — is a remarkable feat of colonial-era engineering stretching approximately 120 kilometres along Sri Lanka’s northwest coast, from Colombo to Puttalam. Built by Dutch colonial administrators in the 17th and 18th centuries as a navigable inland waterway for transporting goods and troops without exposure to the often-treacherous open ocean, the canal winds through mangroves, rice paddies, fishing villages, and coconut groves in a continuous, slow-moving ribbon of brown water. Today the canal remains an important transport artery for local fishermen and farmers, and boat journeys along its length offer an utterly authentic window into Sri Lankan rural life. The Negombo section of the canal, flanked by colonial-era bridges and traditional village life, is the most accessible and atmospheric stretch for day visitors. Small wooden boats can be hired to travel through sections of the canal, passing coconut-shaded gardens, Catholic churches, and bustling fish markets.
