Dutch Fort, Negombo

Overview

The Dutch Fort in Negombo is a partially preserved colonial fortification that stands as one of the town’s most tangible links to its layered history of Portuguese, Dutch, and British occupation. The fort was originally constructed by the Portuguese in the early 17th century to protect their cinnamon trade interests and the port, and was subsequently captured and significantly modified by the Dutch in 1640. The Dutch expanded and strengthened the fortifications, incorporating bastions, a moat, and a watchtower that commanded views over the harbour and the approaches from the sea. Today only a portion of the original walls, a gateway, and some bastions survive, as much of the fort was repurposed for other uses by successive administrations. The remaining structure is now primarily used as a prison. Nevertheless, the fort walls and gateway offer excellent photographic opportunities, and the surrounding area — including the canal, the clock tower, and the fish market — creates a coherent picture of Negombo’s rich colonial past.
