Palavi Lagoon

Overview

Palavi Lagoon is a smaller coastal lagoon south of Puttalam Lagoon, forming part of the interconnected series of brackish water bodies that characterise the northwestern coast. The lagoon is a productive fishing habitat and supports good populations of waterbirds along its margins. Less visited than the main Puttalam Lagoon, Palavi has a quieter, more intimate character that rewards the birdwatcher and photographer who makes the detour. The surrounding fishing villages maintain traditional lagoon fishing methods, and the early morning activity of the fishing community creates photographic scenes of authentic coastal life. The lagoon margins merge with the mangrove habitat that provides the most productive birdwatching sections.
