Overview
The Lotus Tower, officially known as Nelum Kuluna, is the tallest self-supporting structure in South Asia, standing at 350 metres above Colombo’s skyline. Completed in 2019 after more than a decade of construction, the tower is inspired by the shape of the sacred lotus flower — Sri Lanka’s national flower — and features a dramatically illuminated exterior that changes colours at night. Located in the Slave Island district near Beira Lake, the tower serves as a telecommunications and broadcasting hub while also housing a luxury hotel, an observation deck, a revolving restaurant, a conference centre, and a broadcast museum. The panoramic observation deck at 172 metres offers breathtaking 360-degree views over Colombo, the Indian Ocean, and the surrounding countryside — the finest elevated urban view in Sri Lanka. On clear days, visibility extends for over 100 kilometres. The tower has quickly become one of Colombo’s most recognisable landmarks and a symbol of the nation’s modern aspirations.
