Overview
Galle Face Green is Colombo’s most famous urban promenade — a 5-hectare strip of lush lawn stretching along the Indian Ocean coastline in the heart of the city. Built by the Dutch in the 17th century and expanded by the British, it remains one of the oldest recreational spaces in South Asia. Today it is a vibrant gathering place for Colombo’s residents and visitors, particularly in the late afternoons and evenings when families come to fly kites, share street food, and watch the spectacular ocean sunsets. The promenade is lined with hawker stalls selling local snacks — from isso wade (prawn fritters) and kottu to ice cream and fresh coconuts. Joggers, cricket players, and children running along the green create a lively, energetic atmosphere against the backdrop of crashing Indian Ocean waves. The iconic Galle Face Hotel, one of Asia’s oldest hotels, stands at the northern end. On weekends, the Green transforms into Colombo’s favourite community gathering spot.
