Lunuganga Estate

June 14, 2026 claymatics.web@gmail.com Bentota Area

Overview

Lunuganga is the extraordinary country estate of Geoffrey Bawa — Sri Lanka’s most celebrated and internationally influential architect — transformed over four decades from a run-down rubber plantation into one of the great garden estates of Asia. Perched above the Dedduwa Lake near Bentota, Lunuganga reflects Bawa’s genius for manipulating landscape, light, and water into a seamless composition of nature and architecture. The estate comprises a series of interconnected garden rooms, terraces, lawns, temples, and rooms within the main house, all arranged to create a sequence of framed views across the lake and surrounding jungle. Lunuganga was Bawa’s private laboratory and lifelong obsession, where he tested ideas about the relationship between buildings and their tropical landscape that he later applied to his landmark public and hotel commissions across Sri Lanka and Asia. The estate is now managed as a heritage property and boutique accommodation, with day visits possible by prior arrangement.
