Overview
Bentota Beach is one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated coastal destinations, stretching for several kilometres along the southwestern shoreline where the Bentota River meets the Indian Ocean. The beach is characterised by soft golden sand, calm turquoise waters, and the graceful presence of coconut palms bending in the sea breeze. Unlike the rowdier beach towns further south, Bentota has cultivated a reputation for refined beach experiences, attracting couples, honeymooners, and discerning travellers who prefer a more relaxed pace alongside their sun and sea. The calm lagoon area formed at the river mouth provides an ideal environment for water sports, with jet skiing, windsurfing, banana boat rides, and wakeboarding all available from the many operators stationed on the sand. The beach is flanked by a line of quality hotels and boutique resorts, and the sunsets viewed from its western-facing shore rank among the finest on the island’s southwest coast.
