Overview
Kalutara Bodhiya is one of the most recognisable and spiritually significant Buddhist landmarks on Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast, standing at the entrance of Kalutara town where the Kalu Ganga river meets the sea. The temple complex is dominated by a magnificent hollow white stupa — one of the very few hollow dagobas in the world — which devotees can enter to find an inner shrine room filled with thousands of votive oil lamps and a serene atmosphere of ancient worship. The stupa is said to enshrine a sapling of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree from Anuradhapura, making Kalutara Bodhiya a place of deep religious significance for Buddhists across Sri Lanka. The temple sits at the edge of a main highway bridge, and it is a local tradition for passing vehicles to sound their horns as an act of reverence as they cross the Kalu Ganga bridge beside the stupa. This simple, continuous act of devotion creates a uniquely atmospheric soundscape around the temple throughout the day and night.
