Overview

Makandawa Forest Reserve is a protected community forest above Kitulgala, managed with a combination of Forest Department oversight and community involvement to protect one of the most accessible endemic bird habitats in Sri Lanka. The reserve encompasses approximately 400 hectares of wet zone forest immediately above the Kelani River valley, providing a critical habitat linkage between the river ecosystem and the highland forest above. The Makandawa Conservation Centre at the forest entrance provides guided forest walks, birdwatching programs, and education about the reserve’s endemic species. Over 23 endemic bird species have been recorded within the reserve — an extraordinary concentration given the modest size — and the forest walks at dawn are consistently considered among the finest birdwatching experiences available within 90 kilometres of Colombo.
