Overview
The Samanala mountain range — whose highest and most sacred peak is Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada) — provides a dramatic and ever-present mountain backdrop to the landscape of the Sabaragamuwa Province. Visible from virtually every elevated position in the province, the distinctive conical profile of Adam’s Peak and the surrounding ridges of the Samanala range are the defining geographical feature of Sabaragamuwa’s visual landscape. The views of the Samanala range from the rice fields and rubber estates of the Ratnapura lowlands, from the viewpoints above Belihuloya, and from the roads of the highland edge zone are among the finest mountain landscape photographs accessible in Sri Lanka. In the pilgrimage season (December–May), the string of lights ascending Adam’s Peak at night is one of the most extraordinary man-made illuminated scenes in the country.
