Medirigiriya Vatadage

Overview

Medirigiriya Vatadage is one of the finest and most completely preserved ancient circular relic houses in Sri Lanka — a multi-tiered stone platform rising through several concentric rings to a restored central stupa, with four concentric circles of stone pillars at different heights creating an extraordinary forest of ancient columns that is unmatched in Sri Lanka’s architectural heritage. Located approximately 30 kilometres north of Polonnaruwa near Medirigiriya, the vatadage dates to approximately the 7th century CE and is believed to be even older in its foundations. The multi-circle pillar arrangement — the innermost ring most complete — is best understood from a drone’s-eye perspective, but even at ground level the effect of walking among the ancient pillars rising in concentric rings is deeply atmospheric. The site is quieter and less visited than the Polonnaruwa monuments, giving it a quality of archaeological solitude.
