Overview
The coastal lagoon system of the Mannar District — the interconnected series of shallow lagoons and tidal inlets between the island and the mainland, and extending along the coast toward the Wilpattu and Puttalam zone — forms a continuous and ecologically rich coastal habitat of great importance. These lagoons provide fishing grounds for the traditional communities, habitat for the migratory birds and resident waterbirds, nursery habitat for marine species, and the beautiful flat water photography landscape that characterises the northwestern coast. Boat safaris through the Mannar lagoon system reveal a world of still water, fishing culture, and birds that is inaccessible from the land.
