Medaketiya Beach

Overview

Medaketiya Beach is a long, wide stretch of natural coastline east of Tangalle that extends for several kilometres in an almost completely undeveloped state — the longest natural beach accessible from the Tangalle area. The beach faces the open Indian Ocean and the wave energy is accordingly higher than the protected coves nearby, making swimming season-dependent but providing a dramatic, energetic coastal landscape year-round. The beach is backed by a strip of coconut palms and a small fishing community settlement, and the wide, flat sand is ideal for long walks that can extend for hours without meeting another tourist. Traditional fishing boats rest on the sand and fishing nets are laid out for drying and mending in the traditional pattern of the southern coast. Medaketiya has minimal tourism development and feels completely authentic.
