Overview

Ridiyagama Safari Park is Sri Lanka’s largest and most ambitious drive-through safari park, opened in 2020 on a large area of land near Hambantota. The park is modelled partly on the African safari park concept, with large free-ranging animal enclosures through which visitors travel by bus or jeep. The park houses Sri Lankan wildlife including Asian elephants, leopards, bears, deer, and exotic species in large, naturalistic enclosures that provide significantly more space and natural habitat than traditional zoos. The elephant section is particularly impressive — a large herd is maintained in a well-designed paddock area that allows natural behaviour and social interaction. The park represents a significant step forward in Sri Lankan wildlife tourism infrastructure, providing a safari experience accessible to visitors without the early morning start required for the national parks.
