Polhena Beach

Overview

Polhena Beach is one of the finest snorkelling beaches in the Southern Province, located 2 kilometres south of Matara town on a protected bay where a shallow coral reef begins just metres from the shore, harbouring extraordinary concentrations of reef fish, sea turtles, and a healthy coral community accessible even to inexperienced snorkellers. The bay is sheltered by a rocky headland that reduces the wave action and creates calm water in the inner section, and the clarity of the water on calm days allows underwater visibility of up to 10 metres. Sea turtles are a daily presence in the bay — green turtles feed on the seagrass and algae of the reef and are almost guaranteed to be encountered by snorkellers at the right time of day. The beach itself is pleasant and functional, with a small number of guesthouses and restaurants adjacent to the shoreline.
